Chemical Peel Aftercare: How to Care for Your Skin in the Days That Follow
Learn exactly how to care for your skin after a chemical peel — what to use, what to avoid, and how Jacksonville's climate affects your recovery.
You made the appointment, you sat through the treatment, and you walked out feeling like something had genuinely shifted. A chemical peel can do that. But the results you see in the weeks that follow depend almost entirely on what you do — and don't do — in the days after you leave the treatment room.
Why Aftercare Makes Such a Difference
A chemical peel works by removing the outermost layers of skin, prompting your body to generate newer, healthier cells in their place. That process continues long after you leave the clinic — your skin is actively repairing itself, which means it is also at its most vulnerable.
The protective outer layer is temporarily compromised. Your skin is more sensitive to sun, bacteria, heat, and the active ingredients in your usual routine. Treating it gently during this window is not just advisable — it is the difference between a result that impresses you and one that disappoints.
The First 48 Hours
Right after your peel, expect tightness, some redness, and a faint warmth — similar to mild sunburn. For a light peel, this usually settles within a day. A medium peel will feel more pronounced and may involve some swelling, particularly around the eyes.
During this initial phase, keep things simple:
- Cleanse gently. Use a non-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser with lukewarm — not hot — water.
- Moisturise immediately after. A bland, calming barrier cream helps reduce tightness and supports healing.
- Wear sunscreen if you go outside. Your skin's defences are down. Even incidental sun exposure can cause pigmentation at this stage.
Do not apply anything your esthetician has not specifically recommended. The instinct to layer on serums or treat the redness with active products is understandable — resist it.
The Peeling Phase: Days Three to Seven
This is the stage most people want to know about — and the stage most people want to interfere with. As the treated skin begins to shed, it can look flaky, uneven, and patchy. The urge to pick, peel, or scrub is almost universal.
Do not. The dead skin will detach when it is ready. Removing it before that point disrupts the new cells forming underneath, and can lead to scarring, prolonged redness, or uneven pigmentation.
What to do instead:
- Apply moisturiser as often as needed — multiple times a day if your skin feels dry or tight
- Use cool or lukewarm water only; heat increases inflammation and can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid touching your face unnecessarily
- Continue wearing SPF every morning, regardless of weather or how much time you plan to spend outside
The peeling will resolve on its own. Most clients find it far less dramatic than they expected.
What to Avoid Entirely
Certain ingredients and habits can slow your recovery or cause complications. Avoid these until your skin has fully settled — typically seven to fourteen days after a light peel, and longer after a medium peel:
- Retinoids and retinol. These increase cell turnover, which is too stimulating for skin that is already in repair mode.
- AHAs and BHAs. Glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid all work by exfoliating the skin — the last thing you need right now.
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Beneficial in normal use, but potentially irritating on compromised skin.
- Benzoyl peroxide. Skip it until your skin has fully healed.
- Intense exercise and saunas. Sweating introduces bacteria to vulnerable skin and heightens redness and irritation. Give it at least five days before returning to strenuous workouts.
- Heavy makeup. Covering peeling skin traps bacteria and slows healing. If you need coverage, choose a light mineral formula and apply it gently.
- Direct sun exposure. This is non-negotiable — freshly peeled skin has no natural barrier against UV damage, and sun exposure at this stage can cause dark spots that take months to fade.
Caring for Your Skin in Florida's Climate
In Jacksonville and across Northeast Florida, the aftercare conversation has an extra dimension. The sun here is strong year-round, the UV index stays high for most of the calendar — and the heat and humidity mean your skin is constantly managing additional stress even when you are not recovering from a treatment.
In the days after a peel, stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible. Humidity can feel soothing on dry, tight skin, but it also means you are more likely to sweat — and sweat on healing skin is a source of irritation and bacterial exposure.
Sunscreen is not optional here — it is essential. Choose a mineral formula with zinc oxide if your skin is particularly reactive, as physical blockers tend to cause less stinging on sensitive post-peel skin. Reapply every two hours if you are outside.
If you schedule your peel in the spring or summer months — April through October, when Jacksonville's UV index is at its highest — we will discuss timing and peel depth with you in advance, so the recovery window aligns with your schedule.
